How do I start?
To begin ordering your commission simply get in touch via the contact form stating the subject and size of the painting. I will respond as soon as possible. I can provide reference photographs of many farm-yard animals. The choice of which to use will be up to you.
Details for a pet commission
If the commission is of your pet or you would like me to use one of your own photographs, you will need to send it for approval. Remember a good painting requires a good photograph, and I want you to have a good painting! You can send several images if you are not sure which is best and we can decide which to use between us. We can then discuss colour design and which details you would like included in the portrait.
Unfortunately I still have to reject half of all commissions based on inadequate photographs. If you are unsure in any way please read some of my tips...
- Digital photographs must be good quality and high resolution preferably over 2MB in size or over 1024 x 768 pixels.
- They must clearly show detail in the eyes (this is very important).
- Head shots are ideal as more detail can be achieved from a close-up shot. It is useful to remember to fill the view finder with the head of the subject rather than getting lots of background in. Try not to use any digital zoom.
- Try to take the photo from your pets' level rather than pointing the camera downwards. Perhaps have its favourite sweet in your hand to keep its attention!
- The best photos are achieved in natural daylight outdoors without a flash, rather than indoors with a flash. The flash can alter the colour and obscure some details.
- If at all possible try taking the picture outside with your back to the sun. Avoid too much sun on the subject as this can cause unnatural light and shadow in the photograph. Taking the photograph when the subject is in shade is good. If you have to take the photograph inside try to do it by a window, but don’t use the flash!
Once the painting is planned
At this stage I will require a 50% deposit on acceptance of your commission.
Paypal is my preferred method of payment. Paypal is the world's trusted way to pay and get paid online. It's a free, secure, and fast way to send payments. An invoice will be sent from Paypal for your records.
I shall then begin work. An email will be sent to you giving an estimated timescale for completion of your painting. Most work can be done in around 2 months. However this can vary and usually increases around holiday periods.
Once the painting is complete
After the painting is complete I will send you a digital image for your approval. At this stage the balance will be due.
The painting will be sent rolled in a tube, so it will need to be framed.
Paintings to the United Kingdom are sent Royal mail Special Delivery (next day service). Paintings overseas will be sent Royal Mail Airsure (delivery in approximately five working days). Insurance is included.
